Sacred Ground:
A Film-Based Dialogue Series on Race & Faith
St. Andrew's is offering three dialogue circles centered on the Sacred Ground curriculum developed by the Episcopal Church. Sacred Ground creates space for difficult but respectful (and potentially transformative) dialogue on race and racism. Documentary films and short videos will walk us back through history in order to peel away the layers that brought us to today. This will be a personal journey as we reflect on our own family histories and stories as well as indigenous, black, Latino, and Asian American histories. The films, videos and short readings are provided free of charge; participants will need to purchase or borrow two books: Jesus and the Disinherited by Howard Thurman and White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo.
Our dialogue circles will meet every other week to give participants a chance to watch the films and undertake the reading. Group 1 will meet on Sundays from 4-5:30 pm beginning on 28 February. Group 2 will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30 pm beginning on 2 March. Group 3 will meet on Thursday afternoons from 1-2:30 pm beginning on 4 March.
We shall aim for diverse groups so that different viewpoints can be openly and honestly expressed. In white America at the moment, one of the key sources of division is conflicting opinions about race, racism and privilege. Sacred Ground will help us get out of our bubbles. Participants are there to discover their own truths, not to set someone else straight or to fix what we perceive as broken or incorrect in another member of the group.
More information on Sacred Ground is available HERE. Please email Shelly HERE when you're ready to commit to a group, and she'll send you the passcode to unlock all the video and written resources. In the meantime, participants should purchase the two books.
